The Uwchlan Ambulance Corps Adventurers is ready to kick off with its first meeting.

When John Applegate, chief of operations, Uwchlan Ambulance Corps, came up with an idea for a new emergency services medical (EMS) program, he didn’t hesitate in singling out the person he wanted to be in charge.

He selected Tiffany Guth, a young woman who may only be 18 years of age, but who possesses the maturity of a veteran school teacher.

“I have all the confidence in the world that Tiffany will do a great job,” said Applegate. “Not only is she mature, she’s a dedicated emergency services worker and very energetic.”

On Jan. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., the program that Applegate conceived — the Uwchlan Ambulance Corps Adventurers – will kick off with its first meeting at the ambulance building on West Welsh Pool Road in Lionville.

“The Adventurers,” explained Guth, “is geared toward 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and will be a mixture of things that kids learn in summer camps and in scouting. They will learn some basic life-saving skills, such as cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the Heimlich Maneuver, how to apply a bandage, how to call 9-1-1 and what to say to the calltaker. Once a kid learns these skills and how to put them into practice, he or she will be rewarded with a badge - which, for a kid, means a lot.”

In the summer, the Uwchlan Ambulance Corps also runs three emergency service training camps for youngsters: a pre-junior medic camp, a junior medic camp and an advanced junior medic camp.

“The kids look forward to these camps. They find it fun and fascinating to

see what emergency service providers do out in the field,” said Guth.

She added that kids involved in advanced junior medic camp, who are 15 years old or older, have the opportunity to take the two-week emergency responder course, which is a prerequisite for riding the ambulance.
