Volunteer opportunities abound on MLK Day
With Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, many places in Chester County are hosting volunteer events.
With Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, many places in Chester County are hosting special events and volunteer opportunities to celebrate the life of the late Dr. King.
At noon, on Jan. 16, state Sen. Andrew “Andy” Dinniman, D-19, of West Whiteland, will visit the W.C. Atkinson Memorial Community Service Center in Coatesville. Along with the center’s staff, and community members, Dinniman will remember and celebrate the life of the civil rights pioneer.
Also on Martin Luther King Day, the Melton Center will host a screening of Van Jones’ documentary, “The Messy Truth.” Light refreshments will be served and parking is free.
Additionally, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine will host various activities at various locations across Chester County.
Volunteers at the Brandywine YMCA at 295 Hurley Road will give over 400 coats to youth and families in Coatesville, and ask for volunteers to help with coat distribution from 9 a.m. to noon. Interested people can contact Lakeisha Harris (lharris@ymcagbw.org) for more information.
Volunteers at the Kennett Area YMCA at 101 Race Street will work on various projects at the Kennett Senior Center. Currently 20 volunteers are still needed, anyone interested in volunteering can contact Doug Nakashima at dnakashima@ymcagbw.org.
Volunteers at the Upper Main Line YMCA at 1416 Berwyn-Paoli Road will host service projects for high school students in the environmental education complex and Cassatt Preserve from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 20 volunteers are needed. Anyone interested can contact Tony Geiger at tgeiger@ymcagbw.org.
Volunteers at the Jennersville YMCA at 880 West Baltimore Pike will assist in writing to service men and women, veterans and first responders from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. 30 volunteers are needed, and anyone interested can contact Anna Coldesina at Coldesina@ymcagbw.org.
