Plenty in story at Avon Grove Library

WEST GROVE >> The Avon Grove Library has put together a menu of programs likely to urge locals out of their homes and into town, including a special “Harry Potter” afternoon.

Children’s programmer Lisa Sherwood said they will celebrate the professors of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and share the wonder of J.K. Rowling’s unforgetta­ble stories at Harry Potter Book Night on Friday, Feb. 3 at 4:30 p.m. Young wizards, witches and muggles will be treated to and hour of games, crafts and readings from favorite Harry Potter books.

“We haven’t done this before,” she said, but she expects a good turnout. She said costumes are welcome. This is a free program with no registrati­on necessary.

“The staff and volunteers plan to be in costume. In the past, such as our Star Wars Extravagan­za several summers ago, about one-third of attendees came in costume,” she said.

They will not be serving food. It will be held after school and include readings, trivia games.

Happy Heart Day

On Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. enjoy a pre-Valentine’s Day party with stories and crafts followed by breakfast. This is a free program with no registrati­on necessary.

Super Science

Hands-on science projects will be created during Super Science, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. This month, participan­ts will be making slime. Registrati­on is required for this free program for grades K-5.

Cooks Among Books

Homeschool­ers in grades 4-6 can meet at the library the third Thursday of each month at noon to

1:30 p.m. for the Cooks Among Books club. Participan­ts will discuss an assigned book and make a tasty treat related to the book. Registrati­on is necessary for this free program. Attendees are asked to bring a bagged lunch.

Lunch Bunch Book Club

This club enables homeschool­ed first to third graders to read, complete assignment­s and discuss their favorite books with others. Held on the first Thursday of each month noon to 1:30 p.m., this free program requires registrati­on. Attendees are asked to bring a bagged lunch.

PAWS for Reading

This program is held on the first Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. Participan­ts register to read aloud to a trained therapy dog in a private 10-minute session. Avon Grove Library’s assigned dog is a Keeshond named Willow. This free program requires prior registrati­on.

Lego Club and Lego Block Party

These are free, open to all ages and need no registrati­on. Lego Club is held the first and third Thursdays of each month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Lego Block Party is held the fourth Saturday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. Legos, Duplos or MegaBlocks are provided.

Geo Trax Trains

They get the trains out

on the first Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. Visitors can build setups with tracks, buildings and accessorie­s. This is a free program with no registrati­on necessary.

Story times

Babies, toddlers and preschoole­rs, along with caregivers, can attend free story times held every weekday at the library. Most are themed for certain age groups, but older and younger siblings are always welcome. No registrati­on is necessary. Toddler story times are every Tuesday at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Pre-school story time are every Monday at 10 a.m., Wednesday at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., Thursday at 10 a.m. and Friday at 10 a.m.

Avon Grove Library at Starbucks partners with Starbucks Coffee in Jennersvil­le to offer weekly Story

time at Starbucks Thursdays at 1 p.m.

Teen programs

Tweens and teens entering sixth through 12th grade have the opportunit­y to earn service hours by volunteeri­ng to help at children’s and family programs. The Teen Service Club meets every Tuesday, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Teens can accrue volunteer service hours by preparing story time crafts, helping out at family programs and participat­ing in other activities that benefit the library. No registrati­on is needed.

Adult programs

Craft and Create for Adults meets the first and second Thursday of each month 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participan­ts bring their own favorite project from home or can make the featured project

from the group. No registrati­on is needed.

Medicare 101 will be presented in two identical sessions, 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Basics of the federal health care program will be covered. There is no registrati­on necessary.

Tax assistance and return prep

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has partnered with Avon Grove Library to offer help with federal, state and local personal income tax returns on Wednesdays Feb. 12 through April 12. Appointmen­ts are necessary between hours of 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Call 610869-2004 or stop by the library to sign up.
