Chinese New Year event set for Jan. 29
It’s the Year of the Rooster, and the largest Chinese New Year gathering in Greater Philadelphia’s suburbs is more than a celebration of Chinese culture and a time for the Main Line’s growing Chinese-American population to spend good times with family and friends. It is also a time for non-Chinese-heritage local residents to share in the celebration and learn about Chinese history, customs and language.
From 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, Greate Valey High School in Malvern will host numerous local performance artists and hundreds of local children and their families for the gathering. They will participate in a variety of stage performances, including Chinese folk dances, Taichi demo, martial arts demo, Peking Opera singing; and a Culture Fair featuring traditional Chinese arts, games, and crafts (Calligraphy, Chopsticks Contest, etc).
• Local dance artist Weiwei Ma, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the art of Chinese dance, will perform.
• Taichi Master He-Zhen Shao will lead a Taichi performance on stage.
• Dr. Elizabeth Wang-Hsu, president of the Board of Directors of the Nelly Berman School Classical Musical Institute, will perform from the Peking Opera.
• Dr. Robert Hsu will host a calligraphy station.
Performances run from 1 to 3 p.m. folowed by the culture fair from 3 to 5 p.m.
Great Valley High School is at 225 N. Phoenixville Pike, Malvern.
