Tredyffrin/Easttown wins county competition
The team won for the third consecutive year to advance to the state competition
The Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School team won the Chester County MathCounts competition for the third consecutive year.
The Tredyffrin/Easttown team, of the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District, will advance to the state competition in Harrisburg on March 10-11. They are also the defending state champions. The Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School team members are: Andrew Huang, Andy Mei, Eric Zhao, and David Wang.
In total, 23 schools arrived with 182 students to compete at the 32nd Chester County MathCounts competition at Great Valley Middle and High School complex for the local portion of the academic competition. The competition consisted of three written rounds and two oral rounds to earn points. Some rounds were completed as a team, while other rounds scored the students as individuals.
Event organizers announced the top six schools as: Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School coached by Lisa Stehouwer in first place; Valley Forge Middle School, of the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District, coached by Allison Long in second place; Great Valley Middle School, of the Great Valley School District, coached by Robin Tridico in third place; Charles F. Patton Middle School, of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, coached by JoAnna Stump in fourth place; Lionville Middle School, of the Downingtown Area School District, coached by Marie Caramanica in fifth place; and J.R. Fugett Middle School, of the West Chester Area School District, coached by Todd Saundurs in sixth place.
The top five individuals after the three written rounds were Andy Mei from Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School in first place; Alice Xiang from E.N. Peirce Middle School in second; Christine Lee from Valley Forge Middle School in third; Andrew Huang from Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School in fourth; and Jeffrey Tan from Valley Forge Middle School in fifth.
The top 10 students competed in an oral round of questions after they successfully secured their spot during the written portion. During the “Countdown Round” the students competed head to head answering various math problems. At that time, Andrew Huang from Tredyffrin/Easttown was able to make a come-back and he moved up from fourth place to finish in first.
The top four individuals from the competition also advance to the state competition in Harrisburg. The top four students were Andrew Huang from Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School in first place; Andy Mei from Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School in second place, Alice Xiang from E.N. Peirce Middle School, of the West Chester Area School District, in third place; and Christine Lee from Valley Forge Middle School in fourth
place.
The state competition also allows the top two second place teams in the state to advance as “Wild Card Teams.” Great Valley Middle School qualified last year as a Wild Card Team and finished as the seventh place team in the state. Valley Forge Middle School hopes to qualify as a Wild Card Team this year.
SS. Philip & James School received an award for the most improved school. Jack Porter from St. Joseph School of Downingtown won the “Lightning Round.” Andy Mei from Tredyffrin/ Easttown Middle School won the written round.
MathCounts is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. More than six million students nationwide have participated in MathCounts programs, according to event organizers.
The 2017 MathCounts Competition Series will consist of approximately 40,000 students, representing more than 5,500 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U. S. territories and Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools, according to event organizers.
The goal of the competition is to “increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States,” according to the organization’s website.
