WEST CALN >> Two people were injured after their car hit a tree and caught on fire, according to firefighters.

Wagontown Fire Company firefighters were dispatched at 2:18 a.m. Sunday to the 300 block of North Sandy Hill Road for a single automobile accident, reported on fire. Wagontown Fire Chief Todd Zeigler said that the driver and passenger were able to exit the vehicle prior to the arrival of first responders.

The Westwood Wagontown division ambulance transported both people to local hospitals. Brandywine Hospital’s paramedic unit, Medic 93, also responded.

Zeigler said the car fire was challenging because during the incident the fuel line had ruptured and created an additional hazard to the first responders. He said the fuel fire traveled down the street and crews had to use a foam line to control the fuel fire. After the firefighters knocked down the fire, the crews cleaned up the car and the surrounding area. Fire police had the road closed.

Pennsylvania State Police Embreeville barracks are investigating the cause of the accident. Firefighters said that it was unclear what happened prior to the crash and what direction the vehicle traveled. The car was totaled.

Westwood Fire Company firefighters assisted Wagontown at the scene. Firefighters returned to their stations at about 4:30 a.m.
