Norma J. Smith (nee Swanson) of Downingtown

Norma J. Smith (nee Swanson), 83, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Chester County Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late William G. Smith, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2012.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Elmer J. and Florence M. Weidner Swanson.

Norma was heavily involved in her community. She was the past president of the Downingtown Area School Board, long-time member of the League of Women Voters, was founding director of Uwchlan Ambulance Corp, past member of the Exton Rotary, was on the Board of Trustees for Chester County Library and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She also was an avid bridge player and was part of the Writer’s Workshop at Simpson Meadows. Norma was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lionville. She was also formerly on the Chester County Council of Boy Scouts of America and the Freedom Valley Girl Scout Council.

She is survived by her children, Sandra Smith Ratliff, M.D. and her husband David L. and their sons, Cody R. and Keaggy R.; Bryan D. Smith and his wife Wanda and their daughter, Alicia Savage and her son Jason Blouin; and Matthew R. Smith and grandson, Auggie Smith. She was predeceased by a brother, Donald Swanson and a sister, Jeanne Icenogle.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown.

Interment will be private with the family.
