Phelps tops Malvern in PAISAA first round

Eighth-seeded Phelps jumped out to a huge firstquart­er lead Wednesday night, and then hung on to oust No. 9 Malvern Prep, 6761, in the first round of the Pennsylvan­ia Independen­t Schools Associatio­n boys basketball tournament.

Phelps will face a tough test in the quarterfin­als, on the road at top-seeded Westtown either Friday or Saturday.

Kaleb Morton had 22 points and Tim Perry added 20, as Phelps jumped out to a 27-11 lead after one quarter.

Jailen Jamison chipped in with 12 points for Phelps in the win.

Deuce Turner led the Friars with 17 points while Tommy Wolfe added 12 in the loss.

Women’s Basketball

CHOWAN 82, LINCOLN 64 » Chowan shot 60 percent from three-point range in the first half as they opened up a 52-25 lead at halftime and made it stood against Lincoln. The Lions fell to 7-18 overall and 4-11 in Central Intercolle­giate Athletic Associatio­n games. The Hawks improve to 16-9 overall and 9-6 in league play. She’cquan Bailey led all scorers with 17 points. Teira Pendleton added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. McKenzie Spencer dished out a teamhigh four assists. Chantel Roberts led the Hawks with 16 points while Danielle Weldon added 11. Jordan Payne led all players with 16 rebounds. Chowan led the game wire-to-wire, scoring the first eight points of the game while building an 11 point lead after one quarter and expanding it with a 28-12 second quarter effort to lead by 27, 52-25 at the break.

Men’s Basketball

CHOWAN 100, LINCOLN 78 » Lincoln University dropped its fourth consecutiv­e game in the CIAA contest. The loss drops the Lions record to 7-18 overall and 5-10 in Central Intercolle­giate Athletic Associatio­n games. Chowan improves to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in league play. Sean James led four Lincoln players in double figures with 20 points. Joshua Davis added 17 points while Carlton Allen chipped in 13. James Richardson contribute­d 11 points and a game-high eight assists. Umar Saaba led the Lions with seven rebounds.
