Fifth graders build Mars Rovers

-

IMMACULATA >> On Feb. 5, students in Villa Maria Academy’s Fifth Grade were introduced to new LEGO We Do 2.0 wireless robot kits. The girls worked collaboratively to build a rover that would simulate a mission to Mars. Students examined a variety of available sensors and added a motion sensor to their robot build so that the robot would have the capability to detect objects and react.

After practicing with the robots, the girls will put this program to practical use by simulating a supply retrieval mission akin to the one currently being conducted by University of Hawaii’s HI-SEA’s experiment. The girls are thinking critically and using their skills as programmers and algorithmic thinkers to solve simulated “real life” problems.
