Devon Lanes celebrates league milestone

- Staff Report

DEVON >> How do you know when a local landmark truly has staying power? In the case of popular Devon Lanes, one of the first independently owned bowling centers in the country, it’s when one bowling league calls it home for nearly 60 years. When Devon Lanes was born in 1959, the Early Birds League, formed the year before, made its nest there. And while some of the faces of the ladies and gentlemen of the Early Birds have changed over time, the league members have stayed true, bowling their home lanes every Wednesday morning for close to six decades.

In honor of this long-standing relationship with the Early Birds, and to thank them for their lasting support and loyalty, Devon Lanes will host a celebration on Wednesday, March 1st at 9 a.m., at 300 West Lancaster Avenue in Devon. The public is invited to join the event and meet the honorees. This family of bowling friends will share history and stories with guests, and be presented with a gift of appreciation by the owners of Devon Lanes, also a family: Scott Furman, Brett Furman, and their sister Pamela Kofsky.

“It’s a rare thing to want to do any one particular thing for sixty years,” said Brett Furman, co-broker and co-owner of RE/ MAX Classic with his brother,

Scott. “We’re so honored that this group of friends has chosen to stay with us for such a long time. We hope they’ll be with us for years to come.”

The ceremony will also afford the public an opportunity to tour the 24 lanes and arcade, as well as learn about the many improvements and offerings conceptualized, initiated, and implemented by the new management team. These include gatherings like company team-building events, bachelor(ette) nights, fundraisers, and revamped party packages for all age groups and occasions. Also new on the scene are plenty of fun giveaways, with Devon Lanes “merch” coming soon. New, more affordable pricing on group and daytime bowling is already drawing more activity to the lanes, and summer will see the addition of instructional learn-to-bowl sessions for kids and adults, with bowl-for-health clinics for seniors.

Devon Lanes wishes many more happy Wednesday mornings to the Early Birds. The new management

group is looking towards many continued exciting developments in a bright, successful 2017, with many celebratory events to follow in 2018, Devon Lanes’ 60th anniversary year.
