Dear Chaplain» I hope you don’t mind but I have a quirky question. If everyone has their own truth, and everyone has a right to speak their own truth, then why do some Christians get so upset and judgemental when people express a truth that’s different than theirs? — Signed, Quirky Question Dear Quirky Question»

First of all thank you for your curiosity and I don’t mind your questions. In fact, I really enjoy answering all that I receive. In general the definition of “truth” is what’s right, accurate, or correct, no matter what the condition or circumstance is and no matter who’s verbalizing it. Normally, the truth can be verified, investigated, or corroborated, but in some cases it can’t. The truth doesn’t change from person to person, nor does the truth belong to anyone, it just is. Biblically, Jesus refers to himself as the truth, in John 14:6, which says “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” And the Bible, or the Word of God, is also considered to be God’s written truth, so much so that the Lord gives a stern warning in the last Chapter of the Bible… “If any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book,” Revelation 22:19. When people use the cliche that you refer to, “my truth,” what they really mean is this is “my opinion” or “my belief,” those things we all have the right to believe, hold to, and speak about, which are things that do change from person to person. Christians who get upset because others believe differently about God, are really not following Christ. Jesus never forced anyone to believe in him, and we shouldn’t either. Christians should draw others to Christ through their love and kindness, not by being judgmental or self righteous.
