William Claude Hewson, Sr. of West Chester
William Claude Hewson, Sr., 88, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Neighborhood Hospice, after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jane Tyson Hewson; his three children, William C. Hewson, Jr. (wife Barbara), Nancy Turner (husband Frank), and Daniel Hewson (wife Kerry); and four grandchildren, Jessica Turner, John Turner, Amy Hewson, and Daniel Hewson.
Born in Waldwick, NJ, he was the son of Garrett and Bertha Hewson and predeceased by his brother John G. Hewson.
After graduating from Ramsey, NJ High School in 1946, he attended Temple University on a football and basketball scholarship. He graduated valedictorian from Temple’s School of Medicine in 1954.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, he established a family medical practice in West Chester. He went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1967 and was a partner at the Philadelphia law firm of Beasley, Hewson, and Casey for twenty years.
As a resident of West Chester for 60 years, he was very active in the community. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Trustee, and was a longtime Chester County YMCA board member, including presidency. As a member of the West Chester Lions Club, he was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for humanitarian service. He was also a board member for the Volunteer English Program. In 1996, he was awarded the Chester County Chamber of Commerce “Outstanding Citizen” for his volunteer work.
He was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, traveler, and enjoyed summer vacations in Rehoboth Beach, DE and Bermuda.
A memorial service will be held on at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church, 130 W. Miner Street, West Chester, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial is private. Memorial donations may be made to the United Way of Chester County and the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester.
