WCU’s Wright claims second national title

Georgia Wright won her second national championsh­ip, picking up her third All-America citation of the meet, as the West Chester University’s women’s swimming & diving team placed eighth at the NCAA Division II Championsh­ips in Brimingham, Ala. on Saturday.

Wright, who also won the 1000-yard freestyle to open the meet, closed it with a win in the 1650 free. Her time of 16 minutes, 22.92 beat her seeding time by more than 15 seconds. She finished 13 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor from Grand Valley State. Teammate Tess Hayward closed out her collegiate career with a sixthplace showing in the 1650 free in a time of 16:44.06.

Divers Nadia Mulder scored a 388.2 on the 3-meter springboar­d to place 15th and earn her second honorable mention AllAmerica certificat­e of the meet, while Lindsey Pope was 18th with a 379.55.

Queens (N.C.) won the team national championsh­ip amassing 467 points while Drury was second with 385. Wingate was third with 346, and Nova Southeaste­rn was fourth with 250. Lindenwood placed fifth (212), West Florida sixth (201), Wayne State seventh (189) and West Chester eighth (188). his third All-America citation of the national meet. He was sixth in the 400 individual medley and received an honorable mention All-America in the 100 breaststro­ke on Friday. Queens (N.C.) won the team national championsh­ip amassing 563.5 points while Drury was second with 350. Nova Southeaste­rn was third with 313, Florida Southern was fourth with 265 points. Grand Valley State was fifth with 255 points. West Chester placed 18th with 100.5 points. over Concord (8-10) heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Concord was not able to capitalize on a pair of singles as they left two runners on base to end the game. The Golden Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.

West Chester could not claw its way out of a five run deficit in the seventh inning to drop a 10-8 decision to Merrimack College in the second game of the PFX Games. In the bottom of the seventh, Madison Kelly) put the Golden Rams in striking distance by providing a fielder’s choice that knocked in Sarah Walasavage. Sara Ercolani followed by singling in Bri Garber. The Golden Rams (7-4) were threatenin­g as Alyssa Herion doubled down the line, narrowing the lead to two. However, the rally would fall short as the team left a pair of runners on-base.
