Students Spike The Rock for charity
WEST CHESTER >> Bayard Rustin High School students recently engaged in some friendly competition for a common goal - to raise money for local cancer charity Bringing Hope Home. They collected over $3,000 and even had some help from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Rustin senior, Timmy Durant, came up with the idea to host a volleyball competition to help out the charity and Spike the Rock was born. Students paid a $10 per person entry fee and formed teams of 6 people. To keep it fair, only one Rustin Volleyball player was allowed per team. Roundrobin style play resulted in the championship game which was played last Friday during the final period of the school day.
Durant said the inspiration for Spike the Rock came out of his personal experience with Bringing Hope Home. “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was five years old, and we are actually really good friends with Paul Isenberg who is the head of Bringing Hope Home,” he said. “They helped out our family while my mother was battling cancer. I just wanted to give back and help the organization.”

Durant said he hopes Spike the Rock will become a yearly event. For more information about Bringing Hope Home visit www.bringinghopehome.org.
