‘Mascot Madness’
Downingtown school officials host fitness contest to determine who has the best mascot
DOWNINGTOWN >> School officials found a fun way for students to compete for the best school mascot within the district.
As part of the Downingtown Area School District’s Health and Wellness program, special events are held throughout the year to get kids up and moving. The “Mascot Madness” challenge is one such event. This districtwide competition began five years ago.
Staff and students in Downingtown’s 16 schools, along with the staff in the Central Office are urged to log in their exercise hours for a three-week period. The top school gets “bragging rights” and a cash prize for future health and wellness activ-
ities in the school.
Shamona Creek Elementary School came out on top again.
Lionville Elementary School won the first competition in 2013, but Shamona Creek Elementary School has earned the trophy for the past four years.
Shamona Creek Principal
Norma Jean Welsh congratulated her staff and students, and said that it was particularly “awesome” that the school had won again. She credited the efforts of her two health/phys ed teachers, Lottie Adams and Carol Copeland, for cheering on the students and reminding them to log their hours. Downingtown schools Superintendent Lawrence Mussoline presented the trophy to Welsh and the student body.
