Use essential oils to make products that purify and clean

With Earth Day near, now is a good time to start thinking of ways to “go green.”

Making natural, non-harmful cleaning products is an environmen­tally friendly way people can do just that, said Amanda Bohn, of Boyertown. Bohn is a wellness advocate for doTERRA essential oils. The oils are derived from parts of a plant then used for natural healing or cleaning purposes. Below, Bohn has provided several recipes for natural cleaning products.

AIR FRESHENER

Ingredient­s ¼ cup baking soda 5-6 drops of essential oils (lavender, lemon, cassia) Instructio­ns Add oils to a mason jar. Cover the jar with cheeseclot­h or canning lid with holes. Place the jar around your home. You can use the same recipe as a carpet freshener. Vacuum after 10 minutes.

HOMEMADE BLEACH

Ingredient­s ¼ cup filtered water ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) ½ tablespoon lemon juice 3 drops of lemon essential oil Instructio­ns Add lemon essential oil to a 4-oz. colored glass bottle. Add peroxide and lemon juice. Add water. Shake well. Lasts 2 to 3 months if stored out of sunlight.

GLASS CLEANER

Ingredient­s 1½ cups white vinegar ½ cup filtered water 8 drops of citrus essential oil (lemon, grapefruit) Instructio­ns Add ingredient­s to a 16-oz. dark colored, glass spray bottle.
