Emanuel ‘Rick’ Gindin of Guthriesvi­lle

Emanuel “Rick” Gindin passed away on April 25, 2017 at Neighborho­od Hospice in West Chester. He was the beloved husband of the late Fannie Ruth Hicks, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage prior to her passing in 1994.

Born in Highland Park, New Jersey on June 15, 1924, he was the son of Samuel and Lillian Shanholtz Gindin.

Rick was a Morrisvill­e, Pa. HS graduate and attended Ohio State University for three years and also was in their track program. He is a WWII US Army Air Force Veteran having served in the 700th Bomb Squad. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he worked for E.I. Dupont and in 1949 became a project engineer and later plant manager of the former Sonoco Paper Company in Downingtow­n. He was employed by Sonoco until his retirement in 1987.

He served as Fund and Branch Chairman of the Red Cross and was a past treasurer of the Downingtow­n Rotary. He was also a past President and VP of the Downingtow­n Chamber of Commerce.

Rick enjoyed target shooting, photograph­y, cooking, vegetable gardening, piano playing, and spectator sports and was a true Ohio State “Buckeye” fan. In his later years, he enjoyed bird watching and the deer feeding from the view of his picture window. Television, especially westerns and CNN, became his pastime and “as seen on TV” gadgets became a hobby.

He especially enjoyed family gatherings at the house on Zynn Road with his children, grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren.

Emanuel is survived by his sons, Douglas Gindin (Brenda) of Marshallto­n and Jeff Gindin (Linda) of Wagontown. He is also survived by seven grandchild­ren; Scott Ryan, Amy Gallagher, Chrissy Scharf, Kevin Miller, Justin Gindin, Josh Gindin, and Linda Kogan; fourteen great grandchild­ren, two step grandchild­ren, and five step great grandchild­ren. He was predecease­d by his two daughters, Nancy Gindin and Diane Miller and by three brothers, Russell, Irving, and Gerald.

The family would like to thank everyone at Hickory House where Rick was a resident for several months, for their care, love and kindness to him. They would also like to thank everyone at Brandywine Hospital ER and ICU, Chester County Hospital, the Medicine Shoppe in Guthriesvi­lle, and all his Doctors and in-home aides over the last few years. For services provided by the Coatesvill­e VA, they are most grateful. A special thanks to Neighborho­od Hospice in West Chester for their kindness and caring for Emanuel and the family in his final days.

An evening viewing will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 6 -8 PM and again on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtow­n followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be in Beth Israel Cemetery, Coatesvill­e.
