Officials to welcome delegation from Malvern, England
MALVERN >> At its Tuesday meeting, Malvern Borough Council will host a delegation from Malvern, England as part of the “Malverns Worldwide” friendship project. In addition, council will vote on a resolution seeking to end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania.
The meeting will be held at Malvern Borough Hall (1 E. First Avenue, 2nd floor), with a special start time of 6:30 p.m.
The “Malverns Worldwide” project was launched by Cora Weaver and Dr. Bruce Osborne of Malvern, England. They have identified more than two dozen towns across the globe named “Malvern,” and their mission is to learn about the history of these places and foster active friendship between them. They will offer a presentation and a letter of greeting from the mayor of Malvern, England to Mayor David Burton. In return, Malvern Borough will present them with books about the history of the borough, and the Historical Commission will give them a tour of the community.
State Sen. Andy Dinniman, D-19, and state Rep. Duane Milne, R-167, also plan to attend and welcome the delegation to Pennsylvania.
Gerrymandering is the redrawing of electoral districts to favor one political party over another. Malvern Borough Council will vote on Resolution No. 734, “Support for a Citizens’ Commission for Legislative and Congressional Redistricting,” which seeks to end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania.
The resolution calls upon every elected official who represents Malvern’s citizens to support legislation regarding the adoption of an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution. Fair Districts PA, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with leadership from the League of Women Voters and Common Cause PA, is leading the statewide effort to replace the current partisan system of redistricting with an independent, impartial, citizens redistricting commission before the 2020 U.S. Census.
