Najim, Whippets blank East

Pitcher Lily Najim notched a four-hit shutout to lead Downingtow­n West to an 11-0 mercy-rule shortened victory over ri- val Dowingtown East in Ches-Mont softball action on Monday. At the plate, Najim added two hits and two RBI for the Whippets. Caitlin Coker added two doubles and Hannah Greider drove in three for West, which scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Ally Meakim had a double for the Cougars.

WEST CHESTER EAST 13, KENNETT 2 >> The Vikings scored seven times in the second inning and went on to top the Blue Demons in six in- nings. Amelia Lark had three hits at the plate and went the distance on the mount with no earned runs allowed. McKenzie Thompson added two hits and two RBI for East (11-5 overall), and teammates San Gomez, Amilia Andraos and Kelsey McLaughlin each chipped in with two hits.

POPE JOHN PAUL II 3, VILLA

MARIA 1 >> The Hurricanes managed just four singles against Pope John Paul II pitcher Ashley Remington. Alyssa Viscardo drove in Villa’s only run and scratered nine hits and allowed two earned runs in six innings of work on the mound.

BISHOP SHANAHAN 6, WEST

CHESTER RUSTIN 0 >> Alexis Peterson and Devon Miller put on quite a show in Ches-Mont action. Peterson blasted two homers, including a grand slam, during a five-run first inning for the Eagles. And Miller notched 20 strikeouts and allowed just two singles in the com- plete game shutout. Shanahan improves to 11-4, 12-4 overall.

GREAT VALLEY 11, UNIONVILLE 10 >> Haley Barlow’s single drove in the winning run as the Patriots edged the Indians in Ches-Mont action. Barlow went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. Teammate Erin Bevec knocked in four runs for Great Valley (6-10 overall). Olivia Hojnacki notched three hits and Grace Salisbury had three RBI for Unionville. HAVERFORD 6, CONESTOGA 2 >> Rachel Lopez went 2-for-4 and drove in a run but it wasn’t enough as the Pioneers dropped this Central League contest to the Fords. Conestoga falls to 6-7 overall. COATESVILL­E 17, AVON GROVE 6>> The Red Raidersa belted six home runs en route to a mercy-rule shortened decision over the visiting Red Devils. Kayla Bock had a pinch-hit grand slam and Maddie Fleming added two homers for Coatesvill­e (12-2 in the Ches-Mont; 13-2 over- all). Dominique Ricevuto went 4-for-4 with a home run and Natalie Florschult­z added three hits for Coatesvill­e. Rachael Butler and Megan Kristman had home runs for Avon Grove.

Baseball

WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 3, SUN VALLEY 1 >> The visiting Warriors needed a couple extra innings to inch past the Vanguards in ChesMont action. Ian Tracy and Zach Roberts each had two hits, and Brady Bash knocked in a run for Henderson.

PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 7, COLLEGIUM CHARTER 0 >> Collegium was limited to three hits during a shutout loss to Perkiomen. Collegium falls to 5-4 overall.

GREAT VALLEY 5, UNIONVILLE 1 >> Brendan O’Donnell allowed just two hits and got runs in five innings of work and also went 2-for-2 to lead the Pats past the Indians. Pete Giambetti also added two hits for Great Valley. Theron Schilling had a double for Unionville.

WEST CHESTER EAST 7, KENNETT 2 >> Tim Becker and Jackson Berman each notched two hits to help lead the Vikings to a ChesMont win over the Bluer Demons. East improves to 9-6, 10-6 overall. Kevin Wessels went 2-for-3 to pace Kennett.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 1, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 >>

Chris McMahon threw a complete-game no-hitter for the Knights, who won this pitchers duel. Losing pitcher Nick O’Day and reliever Matt Thomas also did not allow a hit for the Eagles. Rustin’s Jake Geisler scored an unearned run in the first inning. Shanahan fals to 10-6. McMahon fanned 10 in seven innings of work.

CONESTOGA 1, HAVERFORD 0

>> Ben Tatsuoka knocked in the only run of the game in the fifth inning on this Central League meeting. Angus Mayock led ’Stoga with two hits and Ryan Buck allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, while striking out five.

Boys Lacrosse

BISHOP SHANAHAN 13, ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 5 >> Michael Tagliaferi scored three goals and Sam Goforth, Kyle Gucwa and Parker Childs each added two to lead the Eagles past Carroll in a nonleague clash. Babe Goforth, Dan Bathon and Brennan Casidy also scored goals for Shanahan.

Girls lacrosse

VILLA MARIA 15, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 7 >> Erin Finley scored four times and Annina Iacobicci and Audrey Santazzia each added three as the Hurricanes topped the Whippets oin a nonleague contest. Villa Maria improves to 14-3 overall. Corrine Bednarek and Peyton Mottice scored three goals apiece for West.

BISHOP SHANAHAN 8, HAVERFORD 7 >> The Eagles outscored the Fords 5-1 in the second half to stage a comefrom-behind non-league victory. Monica Manley led the way with three goals, and Alyssa Manley and Kenzie Staska each added two goals for Shanahan (9-7 overall).

Boys Tennis

UNIONVILLE 4, DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 1 >> The Indians (17-1 overall) topped the Cougars in the quarterfin­als of the District 1 playoffs. The Ches-Mont champs, Unionville advances to the semifinals on Tuesday against Conestoga. GREAT VALLEY 4, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1 >> The Patriots prevailed in District 1 quarterfin­al action. At No. 1 singles, Great Valley’s Sam Kesti topped Dan Kliebham in a match that featured two tie-breakers, 6-0, 6-7, 7-6. OCTORARA 7, GLEN MILLS 0 >> In non-league action, the Braves triumphed, winning all seven matches in straight sets. Darod Dagney and Patric k Murphy prevailed at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.

College Golf

NCAA ATLANTIC/EAST REGIONAL >> Tyler Maiman shot a 73 and is tied for 12th place to lead West Chester’s men’s golf squad at the 2017 NCAA Atlantic/East Regional at Oglebay Golf Course’s par-72 layout. The Golden Rams had three of their five golfers shoot in the 80’s in the first round, and West Chester stands 15th overall on the team leaderboar­d with a score of 314.

Maiman shot one-overpar to stay near the top of the individual leaders and position himself for a possible return to nationals as an individual. Last spring, Maiman qualified for nationals and made the trip out to Colorado. He and his teammates have their work cut out for them in the last two rounds, if they want to climb the team leaderboar­d and qualify for nationals together.

John Abbott shot a 78 and sits tied for 42nd place overall. Drew Patterson signed for an 80 in the first round while Connor Sharp carded an 82.

Adult Baseball

PJ WHELIHAN’S PROWLERS 1, BANDITS 1 >> In West Chester Baseball League action, PJ’s Billy Krebs was credited with a no-hitter, but it wasn’t enough for the victory as the contest was a 1-1 tie. Kevin Jewitt registered a run-scoring double for PJ’s , but Bandit’s pitcher Aaron Coates did not allow another run the rest of the way. In the bottom of the fifth, Krebs issued a walk and the runner advanced to second and third on steals and scored on a throwing error.

Adult Softball

TRI-COUNTY SENIOR MODIFIED >> Landmark topped Coffee Cup 13-0 with pitcher Marty Hornberger allowing just two hits. Chris Carmody went 3-for-3 with a home run and Bill Dotts had a two-run triple for Landmark. Jonathan Farioaks and Steve Sensenig each had a single for Coffee Cup.

In other action, Fence Sense/Proudfoot Roofing topped Carlson’s Auto Body, 11-7. Don Davis and Joe Nagy each had three hits, while Steve Gonsogick and Lou Stolzfus each added two hits for the winners. Rob Hartman and Mike Whelan each had two hits for Carlson’s.

In addition, Ben Stolzfus blasted two homers and drove in six as All State turned back Jitters Sports Bar, 14-3. And Rhoad Scholar Transport beat Coatesvill­e Moose, 10-2. Ruben Torres led the way with three hits for RST. Dennis Norton and Troy Helm each had two hits for the Moose.
