More than 400 people turned out for Phoenixville Hospital’s Healthy Woman 10th anniversary event May 1 at RiverCrest Golf Club. The event kicked-off with a two-hour health and wellness expo, followed by a dinner.

Keynote speaker for the event was Lisa Scottoline, best-selling author of 28 books and co-author of the weekly “Chick Wit” column for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Scottoline, a Malvern resident, spoke about keeping a sense of humor while balancing the ups and downs of life.

“The mission of the Healthy Woman program is to empower women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their loved ones,” said Barbara O’Connor, director of community health education and outreach and Healthy Woman Program coordinator. “Women have a unique role in the health care system. Women are the ‘healthcare leaders’ for their families and research shows that women make 90 percent of all healthcare decisions. Our programs strive to improve emotional, physical and fiscal well-being of our more than

1,500 members and their families.”

The health and wellness expo featured more than 40 local businesses, non-profits and medical practices, according to Phoenixville Hospital spokeswoman Lori Cunningham.

“There were some sale items, but there were mainly resource tables — doctors, business leaders

and non-profits — to connect the dots on resources and services that are available in the community.

Cunningham added that the Phoenixville Hospital Thrift Shop was among the groups that had a table at the expo. She said all money made by the Thrift Shop goes back to the community in the form of minigrants. Those grants will be awarded in June.

Members of Phoenixville Hospital’s Healthy Woman Program are able to take part in seminars, health

fairs, educational programs and interactive events designed for women.

The Health Woman 10th anniversary event was held in partnership with town book center in Collegeville.
