Easttown Library ‘putt-ing’ emphasis on reading
It may be surprising to learn that libraries have existed since long before Anno Domini came around. In fact the first of such records date to 2600 BC, so Easttown Library may seem like a “new kid on the block” by comparison at just a mere 113 years old.
What’s impressive about this “centenarian” institution is that in spite of its age, it has kept reinventing itself to serve the needs of the surrounding communities, particularly as funding for such services becomes tighter. Recently it turned its facilities into a mini golf course to aid the cause.
Moms, dads, kids and teens turned out to not just support the library, but to have family and friendly fun last month. Organizers had run the course among the stacks of books, newspapers and periodical sections before the holes culminated. The undulating “greens” made par threes’ seem impossible, though there were whoops and hollers heard when it did occur, particularly when a few of the more seasoned golfers managed a hole-in-one.
After following their offspring around on the morning rounds, parents came back to the library, located on First Ave. in Berwyn, for an adults only go at the tricky course. What they also learned about was the long list of events that are now taking place at the center. From French Storytime to Mah Jongg for beginners along with Needle Point to a Foreign Film Series the library is always looking for ways to satisfy the community’s love of learning. With summer approaching it may be the time to learn about another class called “Grow Your Best Tomatoes Ever!” Not into agriculture? Perhaps instead a game of duplicate bridge on Friday
mornings would fit the bill. Learn more about the offerings for tots, teens and what the Tredyffrin Easttown Historical Society has to offer by visiting the library’s website at www. easttownlibrary.org.
