LCDR Samuel M. Long, Jr. USN RET, embarked on his final cruise across the Sea of Tranquilit­y to be with his Lord and Savior on May 15, 2017.

Sam was born October 21, 1925 to the late Samuel & Gertrude (Ball) Long in Raleigh, NC. After high school in Tampa, FL, Sam went on to earn a BSME from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. He entered the U.S. Navy as an Ensign rising to Lt. Cmdr. in his 20-yr naval career serving proudly in England, Japan as well as multiple stateside bases.

While in Japan, he met and married U.S. Navy nurse LTJG Nell Chumley of Hartford, KY in 1952. They had two sons. Following retirement from the Navy in 1964, he returned to Georgia Tech with his young family earning a Master’s Degree in Informatio­n Science before making his home in Downingtow­n, PA.

He worked as Supt of Computer Process Controls for 18-yrs at Lukens Steel in Coatesvill­e, PA interfacin­g computers with Lukens’ electric arc furnaces and then with the entire facility, both industry firsts. Over several years, in his “spare” time, Sam rose to Planning Commission­er Chairman and Township Supervisor for East Caln Township in Chester County. A former Life Scout with the BSA, Sam was also active with the Chester County Council ultimately recognized with the Silver Beaver Award in 1996, the highest honor a Council can bestow upon a Volunteer

Following the passing of his beloved Nell, Sam met and married Jean Stager Lawrie in 1994. Originally of Allentown, PA, Jean currently resides in Wellington at Hershey’s Mill in West Chester, PA. In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by his two sons Stephen M. (Debbie) of Downingtow­n and James D. (Denise) of Emmaus, PA, grandson Sawyer M. Long, three stepchildr­en, six step grandchild­ren and four step greatgrand­children.

Visitation 6pm-8pm Friday, May 19 at Alleva Funeral Home, Inc. in Paoli, PA. Funeral Services will be held at 11am Saturday, May 20 at St. Luke Evangelica­l Lutheran church, in Devon, PA. Additional visitation Saturday morning from 10-11 in the church. Full Military Honors Interment at Northwood Cemetery, Downingtow­n, PA.
