Volunteer Fire Association plans fundraiser

- By Gil Cohen For Digital First Media

EAST WHITELAND » Donating to the East Whiteland Volunteer Fire Association is as easy as scarfing down a juicy cheeseburger and a frosty mug of beer. And on Thursday you can do both when the East Whiteland Business Partnership teams up with the Desmond Hotel to host a Spring Preview Party on the hotel’s Sunset Grille deck.

The outdoor dining area opens for the season with a private party from 4:30-6 p.m. Invited guests include members of the area’s business community and other supporters of the fire company, who will be given a brief summary of the company’s history, its accomplishments through the years, and a glimpse at its future needs.

“The whole idea is to drum up support from the invited guests to support the fire company,” said Debbie Abel, vice chair of the board of directors of the East Whiteland Fire Company and a member of the East Whiteland Business Partnership. Tickets to the event cost $25, which will be donated to the fire company. In addition, guests will be asked to sign a pledge card to help defray future fire company expenses.

The party, continued Abel, won’t be all business, however.

Food and beer will be served and, she added, there will be a raffle drawing for a “mega-mega basket filled with goodies, consisting of shore trips, Diamond Club Phillies tickets, restaurant gift cards.” Raffle tickets will cost $20 each; proceeds will also go to the fire company.

Following the private party, the deck will be officially open to the public from 6 to 10 p.m. Three live bands – Matt Santry, Tritide and Mike Caroto Band

– are scheduled to perform throughout the evening.

On the first Thursday of June, July and August, 10 percent of the evening’s food sale proceeds will also be donated to the fire company, said Michael Chain, general manager of the Desmond.
