Forecasters: Heat wave to continue through weekend

-

Don’t like the heat? You might not like the weekend forecast.

The oppressive heat and humidity that has formed a cloak around the Delaware Valley is going away anytime soon. We’re looking at temperatures in the 90s with high humidity right into next week.

There is, however, a chance of powerful storms rumbling across the region through the weekend.

At 1 p.m. Friday the thermometer hit 90 degrees, with a high of 94 expected. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning until 8 p.m. Friday

That does not mean relief is on the way. The overnight low will only dip into the mid-70s, and then we’ll be right back into the 90s Saturday, with a chance of late-afternoon storms.

The heat wave is finally expected to relent with more storms Monday night into Tuesday.

The real-feel temperature out there Friday was 103 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued Air Quality Alerts for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware neighborhoods.

In Philadelphia, the city issued a heat emergency, hoping to avoid heat casualties.

Experts recommend against any strenuous activity. If you have to be outside, try doing things in the early morning or early evening hours, when the sun is not at its peak.

Officials urge all residents to keep an eye on elderly neighbors as well as pets.

Here’s the rest of the forecast:

SATURDAY: Hazy, hot and humid day. Spotty but strong thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon and evening, some of which could produce damaging winds. The high is 93. It will probably feel like the upper 90s to about 100 during the afternoon.

SUNDAY: Hot and humid again with a chance for more heavy showers and thunderstorms at times during the afternoon. High of 90.

MONDAY: Some models suggest temperatures may dip below 90, while other suggest the low 90s. We’ll continue to time the relief, but at this point it looks like 90 for your high with lingering humidity and another afternoon thunderstorm possible.
