Downingtown’s David West, and three Loch Nairn Golf Club teammates, prevailed at the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 28th Senior Four-Man Tournament on July 25.

The foursome – which also included Thomas Finn, Buddy Reed and Alan Wagenschnur -- notched an 8-under-par 132 on the 36hole competition held at Heidelberg Country Club. In the two best of four format, the group shared medalist honors with another team, but were subsequently awarded the victory in a match of cards.

According to West, the strategy was simple: “We wanted four birdies a man,” he said.

“But we demanded that Dave make eight,” added Finn, 56, of Chadds Ford.

“Then Buddy said if (West) didn’t make eight, we wouldn’t play with him again,” Wagenschnur joked.

West fell just one short of the eight en route to inking a 5-under 65 on his own ball.

“We had a great time,” Reed said. “No pressure; Dave made it easy for us.”

Four consecutive birdies from West on Nos. 5-8 set a sub-par standard. The 57-year-old added two more at the 14th and 18th, and this time he got help from Finn (12th hole) and Reed (14th).

“When you get a bunch of guys that gel well together, you’re going to play well together,” said West, who plays out of Whitford Country Club.

King wins second PJT event

Hunter King of Atglen picked up his second win of the Philadelphia Junior Tour on July 31 at the Country Club of Harrisburg.

In the boys’ 13-15 division, King fired an 8-over-par 79 to win by two strokes. King birdied the 18th hole to outlast Bryn Mawr’s Tyler Zimmer.

Dozen locals qualify for Paterson Cup

Twelve local golfers advanced last week to compete in GAP’s 115th Patterson Cup during qualifying rounds. The tournament will take place Aug. 9-10.

At a second qualifier on July 28 at Bluestone Country Club, Stonewall’s Paul Mauer placed fourth overall with a 1-over 72 to finish four shots behind Kevin Komuszko of Spring Mill CC. Alex Cook (Waynesborough CC), Liam McAnnally (Applecross CC), Brendan Bacskai (Applebrook), David West (Whitford CC) and Blake Hinckley (Kennett Square G&CC) also finished among the top-20.
