(Available on Netflix) “Penny Dreadful” aired successfully for three years before abruptly ending. Created by John Logan (the play “Red” and the Bond film “Skyfall”), the series was a powerful drama masquerading as a gothic horror piece, with all sorts of 19th century monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolf Man. It centered on the mystical Vanessa Ives played by Eva Green, whose path crossed with the creatures, all elegantly reimagined. Green is brilliant throughout, particularly when she got to act with equally brilliant Patti Lupone, who had arcs as two different characters in the series.
