Kids have a blast at Cycling Classic
A tradition in West Chester continued Saturday as cyclists and fans gathered in the streets for the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic.
“We come every year, it is always a good time,” said Kathy Takoushian of Chadds Ford.
The event featured a kids race presented by West Chester Dental Arts. The kids race allowed
children between the ages of 3 and 10 to ride on part of the same course and finish under the same banner as the professionals would later in the night.
One participant, Kiki age 7, who also participated last year said, “It was really fun!”
First time racer Conor McElrath said, “I didn’t fall down,” a statement which parents Sarah and Corey seemed happy about.
After the kids were done, some big kids took to the course in the Tolsdorf Trike Challenge which featured adults on tricycles. A portion of the entry fees for teams to compete will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
Earlier in the day, amateurs raced around Bayard Rustin High School to qualify for the Rothman Institute Amateur Criterium held on the downtown course. The race featured some of the fastest amateur riders in Chester County.
The course was a 0.6mile loop featuring 90 degree turns and an incline.
The night was topped off with two professional races, the Bumbaugh Wealth Management Pro Women’s Criterium and the Iron Hill Pro Men’s Criterium. The women completed 40 kilometers and the men completed 75 with speeds around 35 miles per hour.
