••• The injury to Vince Velasquez’s right middle finger continues to puzzle. A day after plopping him on the 10-day disabled list, the Phillies Saturday still did not have a clear idea of the source of the problem.

“Not really,” Mackanin said. “They’re still doing tests, some kind of tests. I’m in the dark on that. I don’t know.”

••• Mackanin is reconsidering plugging Mark Leiter Jr. into the spot in the starting rotation vacated by Velasquez. Leiter is scheduled to throw on the side Sunday. He could start Tuesday in San Diego.

However, in his last two starts in long relief, Leiter has worked 9.1 innings, striking out 16, allowing one run and not permitting a walk.

“He’s so valuable in that role,” Mackanin said. “He gives us a chance to stay in the game.”

Just the same, Leiter seems to have earned a return to the rotation.

“Most likely,” Mackanin said, “it will be him.”
