Driver killed in crash with school bus

Police: passenger vehicle rear-ended school bus and then struck a utility pole; no children were on the bus during crash

UWCHLAN » A driver was killed Tuesday morning following a car accident initially reported as serious, according to police.

Uwchlan police are investigating the two-vehicle crash that involved a passenger vehicle and a school bus that occurred in the 500 block of West Uwchlan Avenue between Northwood and Woodland drives on Tuesday shortly after 8 a.m. Police said that the sole occupant of the passenger vehicle, who was not identified yet pending notification of family members, died at the scene. Police said the bus driver was uninjured. No children were on the bus during the crash.

The collision occurred in the southbound lanes on Route 113, and police said based on evidence at the scene and statements from witnesses that it appeared that the passenger vehicle had struck the rear of the school bus at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then left the travel portion of the road and struck a utility pole, according to police.

Uwchlan police, Lionville Fire Company and Uwchlan EMS responded to the call within minutes, police said, and determined that the driver of the passenger vehicle was deceased. PECO was also on scene because wires were seen pulled down by one vehicle.

Route 113 was closed for several hours during the investigation by police and while PECO replaced the utility pole. Uwchlan police were also assisted by the Chester County Serious Crash Assistance Team, the Chester County Corner’s Office and fire police from several surrounding departments.
