Antoinette Hughes Ham, formerly of West Chester

July 14, 1941 - August 21, 2017 “Toni” passed away unexpected­ly at her home in Little Compton, RI. She was the daughter of Sam and M.L. Hughes of Southwest Harbor, ME.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years Stephen B. Ham of Little Compton, her sister Corinne Lyons of NYC, her daughters Corinne Ham Collins of Darien, CT, Mallory Ham Close and husband George P. Close of Rowayton, CT, her son Mason Livingston Ham of Dover, NH, and 9 grandchild­ren.

She graduated from Westtown School in West Chester, PA, attended Ecole Lemania College in Lausanne, Switzerlan­d, and matriculat­ed at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC, before becoming a stwardess with Pan American Airways.

She and her family have lived in New York City, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, South Orange, NJ and Coconut Grove, FL. She was an active member of the Sakonnet Golf Club, the Little Compton Garden Club, Sakonnet Platform Tennis and a seasonal member of the Sakonnet Point Club. She was an avid reader and a committed member of the Thursday Book Club as well as the Friends of the Brownell Library.

Her community and civic activities included the campaign work for John Lindsay, Mayor of NYC, and Guardian Ad Litem in the Family Courts of MiamiDade County, FL, where she advocated for the children of distressed families ensuring that the Court mandates were properly and fairly carried out. She was a Hospice worker in the Essex County, NJ system. Her most prized accomplish­ments, however, were that of wife, mother, and grandmothe­r.

A memorial service is planned for later in September.

In lieu of flowers, Toni requested that donations be made to The Friends of the Brownell Library or the Little Compton Garden Club.

Funeral arrangemen­ts were made through the Fern Acres Funeral Home, Little Compton, RI.
