Newtown Square Library hosts Main Line Quilters’ display
Love quilts? Then you are going to enjoy a gorgeous display of handmade quilts at the Newtown Square Library throughout September and October. From the walls to the rafters, the Main Line Quilters’ amazing quilts and purses have been completed with traditional as well as contemporary techniques – from pieced works to appliqué.
The ancient art of quilting reaches back to medieval times, when knights wore quilted padding under their armor. Over hundreds of years, it steadily developed from the lovely, utilitarian quilts like your great-grandmother may have made – to today’s creative works of embellished and tessellated stitching. These treasured quilts turn into heirlooms, and often become valuable collectors’ items that ultimately hang in homes and museums.
Over 35 Main Line Quilters welcome all those interested in quilting or handcrafting. They are a generous group, and annually donate more than 100 charitable works of art to neo-natal intensive care units, domestic violence shelters, Habitat for Humanity, and more. And every few years, the MLQ also delivers a gorgeous selection of handmade items to “The Baby Bureau” www.thebabybureau.org, which provides baby clothes to underserved moms for their newborns.
The Newtown Square Library encourages everyone to come and admire the colors, textures, and unique textiles created by our local Main Line Quilters. One lovely piece may be bursting with color, and the next may be an exquisite 3-dimensional Sudoku puzzle – all in shades of white.
The Main Line Quilters meet at 9:45 on the third Friday of each month to hear expert speakers, attend workshops, and view demonstrations at the Tredyffrin Public Library. They also gather on the first Friday of each month for a “quilting bee” from 10 a.m. to noon. There is no charge to attend the bees, and all are welcome. Bring your own project, or join in on one of theirs. For more information, visit their website www.mainlinequilters.org,
