Cougars stay unbeaten in National tennis

Downingtow­n East strengthen­ed its hold on first place in the ChesMont League National Division with a 6-1 victory over West Chester Henderson in a girls tennis contest Friday.

The Cougars improved to 9-0 in the division to hold an one-game lead over West Chester East, and three over the Warriors (7-3).

Sammy Roberts highlighte­d the victory with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at second singles. Maddie Minio won in straight sets at third singles.

Hannah Baxter beat Tali Levine, 6-4, 6-2 at first singles to record Henderson’s lone win.

The Hornets rallied to win all four doubles matches to post the Ches-Mont American victory. Hannah Bartlett and Gina Pilaitis won a key match at third doubles in three sets for Oxford. CONESTOGA 7, STRATH HAVEN 0 » Leah Hottenstei­n and Kate Wieser rallied to work out a three-set win as the Pioneers (7-1, 10-1) swept the Central League contest. UNIONVILLE 5, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 2 » The Indians won the last five matches to notch the Ches-Mont victory. Josie Liu won at third singles as Unionville went on to sweep the doubles.

Jordan Bradley and Holly Koons won at first and second singles for the Whippets.

COATESVILL­E 5, OCTORARA

2» Isabel Hiller and Marley Jones captured singles matches as the Red Raiders triumphed in the ChesMont contest.

Kelly Lomboy was victorious at first singles for the Braves.

Volleyball

VILLA MARIA 3, UNIONVILLE 0» Nicole Cooney had 12 kills and 11 digs as the Hurricanes (7-1) swept the Indians in the nonleague match, 25-18, 25-13, 25-19. Liz Acchione and Kara Sxhiek had eight kills each, Kelsey Hoff recorded 36 assists three kills and a block, Millie Collins notched six kills and five blocks and Molly Dunfee recorded 18 digs.

Elizabeth Sauerbaum paced Unionville (3-5) with 17 assists and 11 digs. Sophie Brenner chipped in eight kills and 14 digs.

WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 3, OCTORARA 2 » Fiona Pyfer had 21 kills and Alli Tench 15 as the Warriors eked out the 25-11, 25-20,24-26, 1925, 15-13 Ches-Mont victory. Taylor Dale tallied 47 assists and Taylor Desmond notched 12 digs.

GARNET VALLEY 3, DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 1 » Jordan Houseworth had seven kills, thre digs and one block and Jill Curran added 13 kills, eight digs and four blocks in the nonleague defeat, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-21. OXFORD 3, COLLEGIUM CHARTER 0 » Logan Wolfe collected six aces, six kills and 23 digs as the Hornets rolled to the nonleague contest, 25-14, 25-16, 25-18. Julianna Huggard added seven kills and Ashley Jones recorded six assists.

AVON GROVE 206, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 212 » Jack McCarthy shot a 35 and Zach Bruechs added a 41 as the Red Devils edgedthe Warriors in the Ches-Mont National match.

Jack Strame led Henderson with a 38 and Sam Bertrando carded a 41.

Water Polo

BEAST OF THE EAST TOURNAMENT » The Friars (80) won a pair of games at the Beast of the East Tournament at Schuylkill Valley High School. Malvern cruised past Exeter in the first game, 18-9. Issac Salinas and Steven Salle recorded six goals and three assists each. Sean Oates and Andrew Knaus added two goals and three assists apiece. Salinas scored the game-winner with under two minutes in the fourth quarter as Malvern edged North Allegheny, Salinas tallied twice along with Oates. Jack Cassidy and Salle notched single goals. Griff Delaney mad 15 saves. The tournament continues today at Lancaster Wilson with Malvern taking on North Penn at 11:20 a.m.
