‘La La Land’ lights up the night for Mann Center
Though many nights, under the lights of the Mann Center’s band shell, have been steamy or even wet, this year’s annual fundraising “Party in the Park” was as “cool as a cucumber” and charming as could be. Guests gathered at the top of one of Fairmount Park’s highest peaks, with a commanding view of the Philly skyline for an opening reception replete with signature cocktails and plenty of noshes before a buffet dinner was spread out.
With the sun beginning to set, attendees descended to their seats as the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia was tuning their instruments to provide intermittent live music from the score of the film “La La Land.”
Though a gigantic screen, spectacular lighting and gauze fabric partially hid the ensemble of musicians from sight, their familiarity with the movie synched perfectly with the plot and was more intriguing than viewing it from an enclosed theatre seat.
Known for attracting acts and artists from the upper echelons of the music and entertainment world, the Mann Center had its beginnings as the Robin Hood Dell Concerts. Eventually the name was changed to its present moniker when Philly businessman Frederic R. Mann stepped forward with ideas and acumen that would bring more shows, performances and concerts to Philadelphia’s burgeoning musical enterprises.
For most of the last decade, when Cathy Cahill took over at the helm of the organization, the Mann has seen an increase in attendance as well as different types of entertainment filling the stage. From the Bolshoi Ballet and Mikhail Baryshnikov to the Metropolitan Opera and Zubin Mehta, the Center has flourished. In addition, a campaign to attract younger audiences seems to be working well.
Haven’t been to the venue this season? Last couple of weeks for visiting performances include Sammy Hagar & The Circle, along with Kid Cudi holding court on the Skyline Stage. It’s a great way to transition into fall.
