Bertha Porter

Bertha Porter, the only child of Paul and Edwina Pierce, was born in August 25, 1916, in Pottstown, PA. During most of her early years, she was reared by Charles and Mary Roberts, her industrious foster parents who raised over forty children for the state of Pennsylvania. During her youth, Bertha attended public schools in Pottstown and later went on to obtain her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education from West Chester University (formerly West Chester State College).

Between the years 1933 and 1986, Bertha was married to the late Stanley N. Williams, Sr. The marriage produced three children – Stanley, LaWanda, and Regina. Bertha remarried in her golden years sharing several years of companionship with Luther J. Porter before his departure in 1999.

Mrs. Porter had been actively involved in community and civic activities in West Chester, PA and Belvedere, DE. In West Chester for several years she served as a committee woman of the 7th Precinct (R) of Chester County.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Stanley Williams, Jr., and two daughters, LaWanda Newton and Regina Lewis; one brother, Wilson Pierce; two sisters, Regina Williams and Marie Bowe; two foster sisters, Gladys Murray and Mildred Keyes; two sons-in-law, the Honorable Harry Lewis and Dr. James Newton; one daughter-in-law, Terracita Williams; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; four great great grand children, and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Daisy Williams; grandchildren, Stanley M. Williams III and Sean White; a brother, Paul Pierce; and her sisters, Dorothy, Vicky and Eleanor.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 10:00am with a viewing from 9-10am at the Simpson United Methodist, 907 Centerville Road, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be at GraceLawn Memorial Park.
