Whippets stun previously perfect Council Rock South

Sammie Sipes scored off a free kick in the first half as Downingtow­n West handed District 1 powerhouse Council Rock South its first loss of the season.

Kayle Detruex kept the clean sheet in goal for the Whippets, as the Golden Hawks (13-1 overall) recorded 13 shots.

The Whippets held on in the second half as momentum in the intense affair swung toward C.R. South.

Girls Volleyball

BISHOP SHANAHAN 3, OCTORARA0» The Eagles continued their 2017 season — self dubbed the ‘Redemption Tour’ — with a 3-0 triumph over Octorara on Monday. The host Eagles swept the Braves 25-7, 258, 25-12. Shanahan was led by attackers Tess Elder (10 kills, three digs) and Cara Shultz (eight kills, two aces, three digs). Michaela Develin and Natalie Ogdon each added six kills for the Eagles (1-0 overall). AVON GROVE 3, MARPLE NEWTOWN 1 » The Red Devils topped the Tigers 25-11, 25-13, 21-25, 25-16 in none-league action. Lilly Charlton led the way for Avon Grove with 17 kills and six aces. Danielle Mininno (14 digs), Kirsten Banter (33 assists) and Hannah Lammey (eight aces, seven kills) also contribute­d for the Devils.

College Volleyball

IMMACULATA 3, CENTENARY 0 » Immaculata won its third-straight match on Monday night for its longest winning streak of the season as it defeated Centenary 25-2, 25-11, and 2511. The Mighty Macs improve to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Immaculata produced a season-high 19 service aces as a team, and had its highest hitting percentage this season at .403. The Mighty Macs had 35 kills on 72 attacks and committed just six hitting errors. Sophomore Olivia Zdradzinsk­i recorded her sixth doubledoub­le this season with 15 assists and 10 digs.
