Cougars, Pioneers in tennis semis

Downingtown East and Conestoga advanced to the District 1 Class 3A Girls Tennis semifinals Thursday.

The Cougars improved to 18-0 on the season by beating West Chester East, 3-0. First and third singles were stopped due to rain.

Sammy Roberts posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second singles to combine with a pair of doubles wins.

The Pioneers (18-1) swept Unionville, 5-0, in the quarterfinals.

Cassidy Landau, Priya Aravindhan and Maddie Wood recorded wins in singles.

The semifinals will be held Monday.

Emma Nelson notched 18 kills and four aces as the Golden Knights (12-0, 19-0) cruised to the Ches-Mont victory, 25-7, 25-16, 25-12. Alessia Mattera added 17 kills and eight digs and Callie McGinnis contributed 28 assists. 23-25, 25-13. Molly Dunfee and Alivia Orvieto had 12 digs each.
