DOWNINGTOWN » Built Fitness gym will be overcome by pink as a workout fundraiser on Saturday is being held to raise awareness about breast cancer.

Built Fitness gym owner Clayton Kellum is hosting a second workout fundraiser on Saturday to benefit Unite For Her, an organization with breast cancerrelated resources. The $20 workout on Saturday, Oct. 21 begins at 8:30 a.m. and is open to the public.

“This partnership with the Unite For Her Organization is one that we are so thankful to have and for us play a part in bringing awareness and support to those living with, fighting and beating breast cancer means the world to us,” Kellum said.

Kellum recently held a “midnight madness” workout fundraiser at midnight on Oct. 13, which also benefited Unite For Her organization. Kellum said it’s a great fit because October is breast cancer awareness month. He noted that 50 people attended that event and he is expecting to triple the attendance on Saturday. He hopes to continue the tradition in the future.

Unite for Her founder Sue Weldon, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, established the nonprofit in 2009 with a focus on women and their health. She searched for information on therapies that would complement the medical treatments she was receiving but realized there was a lack of easily accessible resources on topics like nutrition, acupuncture, massage,

yoga, counseling and other ways for breast cancer patients

to enhance their wellness and care for their emotional, spiritual, and physical needs, according to the organization website.

Kellum said such events brings awareness to breast

cancer and he hopes to continue helping the organization to raise funds for solutions and further assist women with breast cancer as well as survivors. He said that breast cancer is a part of his clients’ lives and he wants to help people who are dealing with it firsthand. Two current gym members, Ellen Whitaker and Lesly Brown, both in their 50s, are now cancer free. He said the

event will bring attention to survivors and women who are “going forth and living their lives, getting healthy and stronger.”

His gym at 123 East Lancaster Avenue opened in Downingtown in April and partners with Unite For Her because of the personal impact cancer has had on Kellum and his family. His mom, Patricia “Pattycake” Fields, passed away of cancer

in October 1998, when Kellum was a high school senior. His brother’s wife also passed away in 2015 of breast cancer. He said such events honor their memory.
