WCU NCAA run ends in PKs

-

West Chester University was forced into penalty kicks for the second straight time in the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament, and this time the result didn’t go the Rams’way.

Mercy College squeezed out the win, 4- 3, on penalty kicks after the teams tied 1- 1 at the end of regulation and overtime of the Elite Eight contest.

After Mercy’s Natalia Elizararras scored for Mercy in the first half, and WCU’s Kaitlyn McNamara tied it up with a penalty kick goal in the second half, the teams slugged it out through overtime to send the game to PKs.

In PKs, both teams brought in new goalies as West Chester brought in Brooke Myers while Mercy brought in Ashley Price to try and slam the door. As the visitors West Chester shot first and Nikki Caffey started things off and scored to give West Chester the early 1- 0 lead. Mercy answered right back and in the second round Unionville’s Hannah Grandell scored to give West Chester the 2- 1 lead. Mercy was able to answer right back but McNamara came through once again giving West Chester a 3- 2 cushion. Price made two great saves on shots from Mandy McCarthy and Shannon Cooley, and with that, West Chester’s great season came to a close.
