Fundraiser helps legal eagles counsel people in need
Navigating legal systems is often difficult enough, even for those who have all their faculties and finances working well. But it’s another whole thing if someone who’s disabled needs advice or counsel from a lawyer, particularly if there are monetary issues to be considered or lack thereof to spend on an issue. It’s these complications that brought the Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD) into being 30 years ago.
A recent fundraiser held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) brought the picture of LCD and the non-profit’s outreach into clearer focus for those in attendance. For some of the guests it was a chance to learn not just what the organization does, but also find out where their goods or services might be the most helpful for clients of LCD.
Though many of the issues presented by LCD’s constituents have to do with physical ailments or impediments, others want to consult barristers about writing up a will or how to get aid or attention for living conditions from local politicians.
On the occasion of the end of LCD’s third decade in service to Philly denizens three women of note were honored by the organization. Each of the gals have been instrumental in advocating for or being supportive of those in the community who have disabilities.
Philadelphia’s special representative award for her time in city government was presented to Sheila Hess while television and entertainment’s Nancy Glass was toasted for her many years in broadcasting. Also being recognized for her work with kids at St. Christopher’s Hospital was Monica Kondrad. These are women who could give anyone good advice or ‘counsel’ if asked.
