Spencer A. Manthorpe, Esq. 1936 – 2017, passed away on November 19, 2017 at Brandywine Hospital. Resided in Glenmoore, Pennsylvan­ia for the last 17 years. Formerly of Rose Tree Media, Havertown, and Drexel Hill, Pennsylvan­ia.

He was the son of William H.J. Manthorpe and Margaret (Nikazy) Manthorpe.

Graduate of Haverford High School (’54), Lafayette College (’58), and University of Penn Law School (’62).

Past President of Haverford Township Young Republican Club; Oakmont Investment Club; St. George’s Episcopal Church Men’s Club; Philadelph­ia/Delaware County and PA State United Cerebral Palsy, Lincoln Table, Union League of Philadelph­ia, life member since 1972; Upper Providence Citizens Associatio­n; Philadelph­ia-Area Lafayette College Alumni Associatio­n; Optimist Club of Rose Tree Media; Received the William Greenip and, C. Clifton Mayfield awards for distinguis­hed service from Lafayette College. Spencer served as reunion chairman three times.

Emeritus master flower show judge for National Garden Clubs, Inc.; 22 years on NGC board and was a life member; vice-chairman of two NGC convention­s; Philadelph­ia Area Judges Council; board member of Tyler Arboretum, Media, Pa.; only man to receive the Gold Seal Award from GCFP for his contributi­ons. Exhibited and volunteere­d for years at the Philadelph­ia Flower Show, Harvest Show; Men’s Garden Club of Philadelph­ia; was a life member of GCFP (Garden Club Federation of Pa. NGC; member of the Garden Club of Springfiel­d, and editor for several local publicatio­ns.

Past board member of Theta Delta Chi National Founders Corporatio­n and Educationa­l Foundation. In retirement, he transferre­d historic records to computer from archives for the Chester County Historical Society, West Chester, PA. Spencer was a member of Romeo (Retired Old Men Eating Out), and enjoyed gardening, sailing, hiking, and reading.

Work experience: Adams & Childs; Hepburn, Willcox, Hamilton & Putnam, firm partner and trial lawyer; Chief Counsel of the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Transporta­tion (PennDOT), was appointed by Governor Thornburgh and served until Governor Rendell (serving under 5 governors). From 1987 until retirement, Spencer was a State Department Administra­tive Law Judge, and heard cases in all Pennsylvan­ia counties. Previous member of Philadelph­ia and Pennsylvan­ia Bar Associatio­ns.

Predecease­d in death by daughter Daphne Elizabeth and oldest son, Spencer A. Manthorpe Jr. last December 8, 2016.

Spencer is survived by his wife Sandra Laros Manthorpe of 58 years, and children Amanda Davies (Bill) and Clayton (Wendy). He is also survived by eight grandchild­ren: twins, Stacey A. and Shelbey Manthorpe; twins, Sidney and Robert P.C. Manthorpe; Henry and William Davies, III; Rebecca and Samuel Manthorpe. Brothers Bill Manthorpe of Rehoboth Beach; Glenn E. (Johanna) Manthorpe of Colonial Beach, Virginia, sister Priscilla (Barry) Sibson of Palm Desert, California, and their children. Fatherin-law of Linda (nee Clarke) Manthorpe and brother-inlaw of George Laros.

Private services were held. Celebratio­n of life is planned for Spring, 2018. Spencer loved flowers, plants, and trees. Please send or give to a friend or stranger in his honor.
