Well-traveled Korkmaz down with foot injury

-

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: A young player for the 76ers has a severe foot injury.

The latest to suffer the Sixers’ curse is Furkan Korkmaz, who inbetween his myriad I-95 tours between Philadelphia and Wilmington found time to suffer a Lisfranc injury to his left foot in a game for the 87ers.

Korkmaz was hurt in the fourth quarter of the Sevens’ game Dec. 15. He is out indefinitely while he undergoes further testing. The Lisfranc injury, a fracture of a bone in the middle of the foot, is different than the injuries that cost Ben Simmons his rookie season last year or Joel Embiid his first two in the NBA. A Lisfranc is more common among football players. It can be treated surgically or otherwise.

Korkmaz was the 26th pick in the 2016 draft, signed away from his club in Turkey in July. He’s averaged 15.4 points and 31.9 minutes in nine games with Delaware. The 20-year-old guard is averaging 1.5 points per game in six appearances with the Sixers.

Of more immediate but less severe concern is Embiid, who will not travel with the Sixers to Chicago for Monday night’s contest. Still not cleared for back-to-back games, Embiid’s status for Tuesday’s home game with Sacramento hasn’t yet been determined.

Embiid played a career-high 49 minutes in Friday’s triple-overtime loss to Oklahoma City, scoring 34 points. He missed two road games last week with lower back tightness, tacked on to the existing caution regarding the fourth-year pro.

Trevor Booker will miss the Chicago trip with a sprained ankle suffered against OKC. The veteran forward has averaged 11.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 19.3 minutes in the four games since being acquired from Brooklyn in the Jahlil Okafor trade.
