PHILADELPHIA » Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is expected to be among the favorites for the vacant head coaching job of the Eagles, according to ESPN.

Schwartz could interview as soon as this week. The NFL has a one-week window for assistants of teams with byes to interview for other posts.

The Eagles rank fifth overall in yards allowed, including first against the run and 20th against the pass. The Eagles are sixth in points allowed as they’re giving up just 19.2 per game.

A few weeks ago, Schwartz quashed speculation he’d be interested in a head coaching job.

“I’ll pass on that question,” Schwartz said. “We have enough to get ready for the Rams, and I think it does nobody any good to mention that. There is really no right way to answer that. If you answer it and say, ‘yes,’ then your eyes are on the wrong thing. You answer it ‘no,’ people are, it’s just not the right time or place to talk about that stuff. We have our hands full with the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL this week.”

Dave Gettleman is the new general manager of the Giants, who have made the playoffs just once in the past six years.

Schwartz has head coach experience as he guided the Lions to a 29-51 record from 2009-13. He had just one winning season, leading the club to a 10-6 record in 2011, and one-and-done in the playoffs.
