NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet
The Coatesville Area NAACP recently celebrated its 55th Freedom Fund Banquet at R.L. Davis Fellowship Hall.
The president, Rev. Dr. James Simmons provided a Community Service award to 96-yearold, Arzelia Barber, for her business savvy as owner of the Evergreen Cemetery in Coatesville and her unwavering support to family, church and community. The award was presented by her great nephew, Earl Johnson. In addition, the NA ACP Pathfinder Award was provided to James “Sonny” Bryant for creating a trailblazing path to success as a businessman, despite challenges and in recognition for his devoted service to his family church, community and the NAACP. The award was presented by Banquet Committee Chairperson Sandra F. Simmons. State Rep. Harry Lewis Jr., R-74, of Caln, presented each recipient with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Charles Sutton, PH.D., Professor of Research and African American Studies at Lincoln University, reminded those in attendance that history confirms the gains made in civil rights were frequently followed by resistance, turmoil and regression but the strategies of organizations like the NAACP and federal intervention were needed to shore up the gains. He said civil rights gains were enjoyed in the ‘60s but now people are in a period of turmoil and regression; thus, the NAACP and federal intervention will again be needed to shore up the gains.
Three members of the NAACP youth group, Jaeden and Neleh Beard and Brittney Brooks agreed with Sutton. Their essays, which were read during the banquet, confirmed their fears and the racial disparity each experienced. The ultimate conclusion of their essays was “We still need the NAACP,” to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all.
Simmons presented a youth life membership award to Kristen Williamson for taking this bold advocacy step. Simmons reminded the attendees that the mission of the NAACP is to ensure equality of opportunity for all and the elimination of racebased discrimination.
