Lunch and fashion show honors scholarship recipients
There were throngs of women, along with a spattering of men, who recently attended the annual luncheon and fashion show held at and for the Union League of Philadelphia (ULP). The patriotic society, founded shortly after the “battle between the states” had begun to be waged, has attracted business leaders, politicians, out of town guests and several debutante balls since its inception in 1862.
On this occasion guests were celebrating not only the “over 50” mark since women on the Ladies Committee had begun gathering for food, drink and a gander on what well-dressed gals would wear over the winter, but also to recognize two deserving students who were receiving needed scholarships to further their education.
Hermes Paez had been the recipient of the Women’s Committee’s largess five years ago. The monies he’d gotten enabled him to not only matriculate at The School at Church Farm in Chester County, but eventually the young man is hoping to continue his learning at Bard College before his end goal of going on to medical school.
Also in the audience and eventually on stage to receive a scholarship was Madyson Thompson. A graduate of New Foundations Charter High School, this young lady also has hopes of eventually becoming a physician. For now her concentration is on doing her best as a first year student in college at Temple University.
With accolades bestowed, guests turned their attention to the high-end fashion show, touting St. John clothing from casual to couture which was a big hit with the audience.
