Jeannette Harris Vollmecke of West Brandywine
Jeannette Harris Vollmecke of West Brandywine Township, Pa., passed away peacefully at home Dec. 27, 2017. She was 88.
“Jan” was born June 16, 1929, to Thelma Mae Johnson and Lee Ottis Harris in Birmingham, Ala.
After graduating from high school Jan moved to live with her only sister, Marian, in Washington, D.C. There she met and married Albert Vollmecke. Soon afterward they moved to San Diego, where Albert worked in the aviation industry and all five of their children were born. After ten years in San Diego they headed to the Seattle area for a year before moving to Swarthmore, Pa., where they lived for some 20 years as they raised their family. They purchased “the farm” in West Brandywine Township in 1984. There they grew and marketed fruits and vegetables and worked on their old farmhouse. Jan was the beloved salesperson at Vollmecke Farm and Orchards for many years.
She is survived by her five children, John (and Christie) Vollmecke, Teresa Vollmecke, Robert (and Estelle) Vollmecke, Karl Vollmecke, and Karen Vollmecke; her cousin, Buddy Parker; her niece, Pam Moreland Lucas; and her nephew, Michael Moreland.
Jan’s life will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Chester County Food Bank, 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton, PA 19341
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chester County Food Bank or the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA).
