Whippets head to Hershey after easy win over Ryan

Downingtow­n West rolled into the Hershey portion of the PIAA Class 3A Duals, taking care of District 12 runnerup Archbishop Ryan, 51-15, in the preliminar­y round Monday night at Ryan.

Senior Nick Lilley (145 pounds) won his 100th career bout with a technical fall. West will face District 11 champion Bethlehem Catholic in the first round in Hershey on Thursday evening at 6 pm.

Matt Wolf (120), Max Hale (170), Chase Mielnik (182) and Jesse Cook (285) earned falls for West, while the Whippets also got bonus points from Doug Zapf (126), Chase Hanak (138), Gavin Hale (152) and Chris Madanat (195).

Boys Basketball

UPPER DARBY 52, CONESTOGA 39 » Magd Abelwahab bagged 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and Diby Keita had 13 as UD swept the season series with Stoga. Visiting Upper Darby (15-6, 105) did not trail as it pulled into a threeway tie with Garnet Valley and Conestoga in the Central.

Shane Scott topped the Pioneers with 10 points.

PHELPS 95, SP IRE INSTITUTE 57» Arashma Parks led the way with 18 points and Zuri Peyton added 16 as Phelps routed SPIRE in a nonleague game.

Yagizhan Selcuk had 14, Jailen Jamison had 11 and Nedas Nacickas had nine for Phelps in the runaway win. COLLEGIUM CHARTER 54, MERCY TECHNICAL 45 » Peter Graham had 18 points and Kyjuan Cannady added 10 as Collegium took care of Mercy in the TriCounty League affair. Sion Allen had nine points and AJ Mitchell added seven in the win.

Girls Basketball

AVON GROVE 56, DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 52 (OT) » Jamie Perkins had 25 points and Amanda Smida added 16 as the Red Devils pulled off an overtime win over Downingtow­n West in Ches-Mont League National action.

Sara White added nine points for Avon Grove (2-8, 5-15) in the win.

Sammie Sipes led the Whippets with 16 points, followed by Julia Marone, Grace Wenner and Jessie Wills with nine points each. CONESTOGA 65, UPPER DARBY 38 » Katie Mayock had 24 points and Liz Scott added 15 for the Pioneers in the Central League victory.

Upper Darby’s Emma Blewett scored her 1,000th career point in the losing effort. UPPER MERION 36, KENNETT 27 » Andrea Prestianne had 11 points for the Blue Demons’ in the nonleague loss. VILLA MARIA 62, BISHOP SHANAHAN 35 » Paige Lauder led the way with 19 points and Abby Walheim had 14 in the Hurricanes’ nonleague win.

Megan Cox (13 points) and Sammie McCarter (12 points) led the Eagles in a losing effort.
