Zubillaga, Unionville edge Octorara in pitcher’s duel

Joe Zubillaga drove in the only run to propel the Unionville baseball squad to a 1-0 Ches-Mont American victory over visiting Octorara on Monday. In a pitcher’s duel, Indians’ starter Noah Kirkland scattered five hits and struck out nine for the completega­me shutout. Octorara starter Aaron Feld surrendere­d just two hits and fanned 11, but was saddled with the loss. Nick Samulewicz and Alex Pelegrin had the two hits for the Indians. DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 17, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 » Joe Cestare drive in five runs and Joe Janik knocked in four to power the Cougars to a four-inning, mercy-rule Ches-Mont victory over the Eagles. Tommy Hammett, Janik and Mike Rodriguez each had two hits for East. GREAT VALLEY 4, SUN VALLEY 0» The Patriots broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Connor Malloy and Cade Reat each had significan­t RBIs in the rally and each had two hits for the contest. Pitcher Wiley Muck went six and two-thirds innings, scattered four hits and fanned nine to get the win. WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 13, KENNETT 3 (6 INNINGS) » Knights coach Bruce Dudley notched his 200th career softball victory as Rustin turned back the Blue Demons. Mallory Hardwick and Nicole Inforzato each went 3-for-5 to pace the Knights, who also got a three-run homer from Maddie Fife. Emily Basick also drove in two runs for Rustin. Kennett’s Ainsley had a double. POTTSTOWN 9, COLLEGIUM CHARTER 7 » Despite jumping out to a 6-0 early lead, Collegium Charter surrendere­d eight run in the third inning and ended up falling to Pottstown in non-league action. CONESTOGA 13, UPPER DARBY 3 » Mike Della Polla led the way pitching four innings and allowing just two hits hits while striking out six. Cam Marcus finished the game with three strong innings while striking out five. Offensivel­y Luke Borger, Owen Margolis, and Will Mauro each had multihit games. Ryan Buck and Eric Anderson each added two RBI’s apiece.

UNIONVILLE 17, OCTORARA 1 (4 INNINGS) » Anna Deshaies, Analise Griffiths, and Maddie Boorse each had hits in every at-bat, leading the Indians past the Braves. Grace Salisbury also drove in four runs. Starting pitcher Maddy Frich went all four innings on the mound. BISHOP SHANAHAN 13, DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 0 » The Eagles broke open a tight battle with a nine-run rally in the seventh inning to beat the Cougars. Katy Newton (4-for-5, 3 RBIs), Devon Miller (three hits) and Kat Rosfelder (3-for4, 2 RBIs) led the way for Shanahan. On the mound, Miller allowed just six hits and struck out 12. AVON GROVE 8, WEST CHESTER EAST 3 » Rachel Butler had two hits and two runs batted in at the plate, and went the distance on the mound to pace the Red Devils. Butler allowed just three hits and two earned runs, and teammate Olivia Kunitsky went 3-for-4 and drove in a run for Avon Grove.

WEST CHESTER EAST 5, COATESVILL­E » The Vikings took all five matches 6-0, 6-0. Johnny Gluchouski, Luke Lagalente and Kunal Maheshawi wer the singles winners for East. OCTORARA 7, SUN VALLEY 0 » The Braves won two close doubles matches en route to blanking the Vanguards. At No. 1, Michael Rudisill and Tommy Myers edged Grady Southern and Jake Baron, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4. And at No. 2, Will Gallagher and Andrew Tate survived a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 marathon. DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 6, AVON GROVE 1 » The Cougars swept the singles matches and then pulled out a trio of three-setters in doubles to top the Red Devils. The No. 1 team of Eric Marsillo and Aditya won 5-7, 6-3, 6-3; the No. 3 duo of Colin Salig and Gahesh and Dendulun prevailed 6-7, 6-2, 6-0 and the No. 4 team of Rohit Krishnan and Justin Michinok eked out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 triumph. GREAT VALLEY 5, RADNOR 2 » In non-league action, the Patriots topped its Central League foe. Brothers Sameer and Nikyil Gangoli each won in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2 singles for Great Valley. Ryan Hamel also won at No. 3 singles for the Pats. WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 4, KENNETT 3 » Jack Batchelor and Nick Gentile rallied from a set down to win at No. 4 doubles to provide the narrow margin of victory. The score was 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Knights won three of four doubles matches, while the Demons prevailed in two of three singles matches. UNIONVILLE 7, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 0 » The Indians won six of seven matches in straight sets. The only exception came at No. 3 singles, where Unionville’s Vince Cianciulli outlasted the Warriors’ Andrew Urzillo, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 10-6. BISHOP SHANAHAN 7, OXFORD 0 » The Eagles blanked the Hornets, and dropped a total of nine games along the way. Ryan Connors, Justin Amrein and Ben Schmidt all cruised in singles action. And at No. 1 doubles, Tim Bladja and Matt Ziegler topped Donte DiFrancesc­o and Josh Finnefrock, 6-2, 6-3.

DEVON-DELCO CHRISTIAN 7, FATHER JUDGE 1 » Tim Fitzgerald scored three goals and goalie Ryan Klauder made seven saves. The Devon-Delco Christian defense was led by Luke Gutowski, Anthony Maiale, Tyler Gazda and Cole Hines.

HERION HONORED BY PSAC » Former Avon Grove standout Alyssa Heron was named the PSAC East Player of the Week Honors. Herion recorded 13 hits, eight RBIs, seven runs scored, five doubles and two home runs in action last week. Against Kutztown on Thursday Herion was unstoppabl­e as she went a perfect 7-for-7 with four runs scored, seven RBIs, three doubles and two home runs to help lead West Chester to a sweep of Kutztown.

A day later against Shippensbu­rg, Herion had another strong day as she went 4-for-9 with two runs scored, one RBI and a double to help West Chester pick up a split with Shippensbu­rg. Against Millersvil­le on Sunday afternoon Herion went 2-for-6 with one clutch RBI double in game two to tie the game at two and spark a huge nine run fifth inning to help West Chester sweep Millersvil­le.

WEST CHESTER IN SEVENTH PLACE AT COTTRELL INVITATION­AL » Junior Tyler Maiman carded a 5-overpar 75 on the day to help the Golden Rams to place seventh in the opening round of the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitation­al at the Penn Oaks Golf Club on Monday.

Featuring two of the top finishers on Monday, California heads into Tuesday’s final round leading the pack with a 300 (+20) — besting second place Millersvil­le (301) by just a single stroke.
