WEST CHESTER » A man was fatally shot on a borough street Tuesday night, officials said.

West Chester Borough Police said the incident occurred at approximately 9:11 p.m. to the rear of 212 E. Market St., near the intersection with Matlack Street, at the Star Social Club.

Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Eric Brown. Police say the shooting was a targeted event, with suspects in mind. Details of the incident remain under investigation.

The shooter is not in custody at this time.

The victim was shot in the chest and transported to Paoli Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police described the suspect as a black male wearing a white shirt and black hat. No further description is available and the direction of travel was not provided.

As a precautionary measure, the West Chester University campus community was warned to avoid walking alone, to limit alcohol, to use well-lit sidewalks after dark, let someone know of your plans and to be aware of your surroundings.

District Attorney Tom Hogan stated: “This was a senseless killing of a young man. Most of the action inside and outside the Star Social Club was captured on video. Those involved should turn themselves into the police immediately and peacefully.”

Police Chief Scott Bohn said officers responded immediately to secure the scene and begin an investigation.

“Although this type of violence is rare in West Chester, we are always prepared,” Bohn said. “Even though this crime took place some distance from West Chester University and did not involve the university, we still alerted authorities pursuant to our usual protocol.”

The university reported on a Facebook site that the victim was not a student.

Anyone with any information concerning this incident is asked to call West Chester Police at 610-6962700.
