Coatesvill­e softball stays unbeaten after slugfest with Avon Grove

The Coatesvill­e High School softball squad (8-0, 7-0) blew open a back-andforth game with a nine-run fifth inning and then hung on to defeat Avon Grove 14-12 Friday evening in a clash of two of the top teams in the ChesMont National Division. Coatesvill­e’s top hitters included Kayla Bock (3-for3, two run home run), Payton Landis (three hits, four RBI’s, three-run home run) and Maggie Kane (three hits, one double). McKenna Sherman pitched three innings of relief to gain the win on the mound and helped her own cause with two hits. For Avon Grove, Rachael Butler (two runs scored, three RBI’s) and Olivia Kunitsky (two runs scored, three RBI’s) each had a double and home run.

WESTTOWN 5, GEORGE SCHOOL 2 » Westtown senior pitcher Jon Moldoff struck out 17 batters in seven innings, allowing only three hits, no walks and one earned run, and helping himself at bat with a double. The Ursinus College-bound Moldoff, who had 18- and 15-strikeout performanc­es last year, was backed Friday by the batting of Patrick Culcasi (3-for-3, two doubles, three RBI’s, one run scored) UNIONVILLE 7, GREAT VALLEY 3 » The Indians were led by Jason Moore (3for-3, two doubles) and home runs by Kyle Lyons, Austin Ahart and Alex Pelegrin. Winning pitcher Nick Samulewicz gave up only two earned runs in six innings and struck out six. BISHOP SHANAHAN 18, WEST CHESTER EAST 1 » The Eagles rolled to a fourinning victory, led by the bats of Matt Samson (3-for-3, four runs scored), Matt Bertolami (2-for-3, double, four RBI’s, three runs scored), Austin O’Dell (3-for-4, double, three RBI’s), Dan DiBeneditt­o (2-for-4, three runs scored) and David Angelo (3for-3, three runs scored). Bertolami pitched a complete-game victory, giving up just three hits and three walks while walking three. For East, Adam Smith cracked a double, and Seth Michel had a hit and an RBI. AVON GROVE 3, COATESVILL­E 1 » Avon Grove pitchers Alex Ei and Riley Davis combined to hold the Raiders to five hits. Andrew Brady, Bryce Carey and Bailey Smith each had two hits for the Red Devils, and Jack Lincoln cracked a double for Avon Grove. Caleb Hershey had two hits for Coatesvill­e.

Softball

KENNETT 10, OCTORARA 0 » Kennett pitcher Hannah Slicer threw a twohit, five-inning shutout, and was backed by the bats of Jordan Barish (2-for-4, four runs scored) and Ainsley Albert (2-for-4, home run, four RBIs). WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 8, OXFORD 7 » Rustin (5-3) extended its winning streak to five games (all played this past week) with the victory, led by Nicole Inforzato (double, two RBIs), Elena Ciarrocchi (double, two RBIs) and Maddie Fife (2-for-2, one run scored). For host Oxford, the batting leaders were Gianna Coyle (3-for-5, two runs scored), Abbey O’Connor (4for-4, three RBIs), Julie Cappelli (2for-4, one run scored) and Natalie Oliver (two hits).

BISHOP SHANAHAN 4, WEST CHESTER EAST 3 » The Eagles defeated host West Chester East, winning first singles (Ryan Conners), third singles (Ben Schmidt), second doubles (Matt Ziegler/Tim Bladja) and fourth doubles (Joey D’Angelo/Connor Bailey). East was led by Luke Leglante, who won second singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score. OXFORD 7, GLEN MILLS 0 » The host Hornets sewpt all matches, including Caleb Meyers (first singles), Aedin Maio (second singles), Donte DiFrancesc­o (third singles), Brandon Rubbo/Logan Shafer (first doubles), Joey Sapp/Josh Kern (second doubles), Brennan Italia/Harshel Mehta (third doubles) and Michael Walling/Greg Rubbo (fourth doubles). UNIONVILLE 6, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN1» The Indians (10-0, 7-0) swept the singles matches and three of the four doubles matches in straight sets. Singles winners were Tristan Bradley (first singles), Ethan Bradley (second singles) and Victor Li (third singles). DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 7, AVON GROVE 0» The Whippets swept all of their matches by straight sets. Singles winners were Brett Graybill at first singles (won 6-0, 6-0), Josh Biskowitz at second singles (won 6-0, 6-0) and Ben Kane at third singles.

Boys’ Lacrosse

BISHOP SHANAHAN 14, ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 3 » The Eagles were led by Connor Heisman (four goals, three assists), Kyle Gucwa (five goals, two assists) and Tyler Kingsbury (won 14 of 16 faceoffs). Shanahan goalie Nic Pezone recorded six saves.

College Softball

IMMACULATA 8, CEDAR CREST 7 » In the first game of a doublehead­er, the host Mighty Macs erased a 7-3 deficit after three innings with two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth, including the go-ahead RBI single by senior Annemarie Bartow. Freshman Renee DeAngelis tossed 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the first win of her collegiate career. IMMACULATA 11, CEDAR CREST 3 » In the second game of a doublehead­er, the Mighty Macs (14-10, 7-1 CSAC) escaped a few jams defensivel­y and pounded out 17 hits for the big victory. This was the first of three straight doublehead­ers for Immaculata.
