Collins’ 100th hit boosts Henderson to victory

The West Chester Henderson softball team defeated Kennett, 13-7, Wednesday, and Kasey Collins led the offensive onslaught, going 4-for-4, including her 100th career hit, a hard-hit ground ball past shortstop that drove in a third-inning run. Megan McAfee was 2-for-3 with five RBIs, Grace Abbonizio went 3-for-4, and Brooke Matontio was 2-for-3.

GREAT VALLEY 4, BISHOP SHANAHAN 2 » The host Patriots scored three runs in the fith inning to come away with a victory. Great Valley’s Brendan O’Donnell had two hits and two RBI’s for the winners. Each team had only four hits. OXFORD 2, WEST CHESTER EAST 1 » The Hornets’ Dalen Griffith lined a single into right field to score Ryan Todd with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Winning pitcher Noah Sperratore led off the seventh with a single, and was replaced by Todd as courtesy runner. Todd stole second, then scored on Griffth’s hit. Michael Marvel went 2-for-3 for Oxford, while Evan Werley went 2-for-3 for East, with a double. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 14, KENNETT 8 » The Warriors exploded for nine runs in the first two innings en route to the win. For Henderson, Thomas Caulfield was 4-for-5, with a home run, three runs scored and 2 RBI’s; Evan Spano had two runs scored, two RBI’s and a home run; and James Vito had three doubles. For Kennett, Mitch Balint had a double, a home run and five RBIs. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 11, COATESVILL­E 2 » The Whippets were led by Evan Williams (four runs scored), Tommy Eliason (home run) and Eric Grintz (home run, two hits). Winning pitcher Jack Reese gave up only five hits in six innings, striking out six. MARPLE NEWTOWN 4, CONESTOGA 0 » Jacob Marcus pitched 6.1 strong innings for the Pioneers, giving up three earned runs while striking out nine.

AVON GROVE 4, SUN VALLEY 0 » Red Devil pitcher Rachel Butler hurled a six-hit shutout, striking out 11 batters and walking only one. BISHOP SHANAHAN 8, GREAT VALLEY 1 » Eagles pitcher Devon Miller hurled a twohitter, striking out 15 batters and walking none. Bishop Shanahan scored seven runs in the first inning, and Katy Newton, Casey McAllister and Anne Weyland each had two hits for the Eagles. UNIONVILLE 18, OCTORARA 6» Analise Griffiths went 5-for-5 at the plate with a grand slam. Anna Deshaies also notched a grand slam for Unionville. Maddy Frich got the win on the mound, recording three strikeouts. WEST CHESTER EAST 6, OXFORD 2 » For the Vikings, Sam Gomez pitched a complete-game victory, Kinzie Thompson had a two-run triple and two walks and Kelsey McLaughlin was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI’s. For Oxford, Gianna Coyle and Abbey O’Connor each were 2-for-4. DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 11, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 7 » Jess Meluskey pitched a complete game for the Cougars (4-5, 4-5) and struck out 10. On offense, the Cougars’ Steph Jacoby went 4-for-4, with three doubles and three runs scored. The Cougars also had multi-hit games from Lexi Hammer, Ally Meakim, Sam Ponto, Val Ponto and Grace McKelvey.

VILLA MARIA ACADEMY 12, GWYNEDD MERCY 4 » The Hurricanes had nine different players score goals, and Bridget Finley, Abby Walheim and Erin Finley each scored two goals. Villa Maria goalie Maddie Medve recorded 10 saves.

Boys’ Tennis

UNIONVILLE 7, AVON GROVE 0 » The visiting Indians (11-1) swept all of their matches, and contributi­ng to the win were Danny Piper and Tommy Moore at third doubles and Andrew Huang and Spencer Guest at fourth doubles. Tristan Bradley won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, Ethan Bradley won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Clay Horowitz won 6-2, 6-1 at third singles. KENNETT 7, OXFORD 0 » The Blue Demons swept every match in straight sets. Singles winners were Davis Piercy (first), Nick DeFelice (second) and Noah Rasero (third). BISHOP SHANAHAN 7, SUN VALLEY 0 » The Eagles swept the singles matches in straight sets, with Ryan Connors at first singles, Justin Amrein st second singles and Ben Schmidt at third singles. GREAT VALLEY 7, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 0 » The Patriots won all of their matches in straight sets, with Sameer Gangoli winning at first singles, 6-0, 6-0; Sam Kesti winning second singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Nikhil Gangoli victorious at third singles, 6-0, 6-1. WEST CHESTER EAST 7, OCTORARA 0 » The host Vikings captured all seven of their matches by straight sets, with Johnny Gluchowski, Luke Lagalante and Kunal Maheshawar­i victorious in the singles matches. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 6, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 1 » The Whippets won all their matches except for third singles. Brett Graybill won in straight sets at first singles, and Josh Biskowitz prevailed at second singles. Rustin’s Evan Antonacci was victorious at third singles.

WEST CHESTER 1, WILIMINGTO­N0» No. 24 ranked West Chester (29-10) welcomed a non-conference foe in Wilmington to the friendly confines on Wednesday afternoon for a midweek doublehead­er. West Chester took game one 1-0 in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning on Bri Garber’s game-winning single after West Chester Henderson grad Heidi McColleste­r advanced the runners with a ground out. Winning pitcher Amanda Houck gave up just five hits and seven innings, while striking out seven. WILMINGTON­7,WESTCHESTE­R 2» The Golden Rams dropped the second game of the twinbill, falling behind 4-0 in the first inning. West Chester’s Cat Hammer’s two-run single in the bottom of the third inning cut the deficit to 4-2.
